So a few weeks ago I sent over all my footage to Daniel at Strive.TV from the main Freestyle Session’s throughout the years. 14 Years worth of footage so he can pick through and post some of the historic battles that have taken place. First up to bat is Soul Control vs Flying Tortilla’s.
Soul Control at the time were at the top of there game innovating power moves as a crew and holding it down tuff in Los Angeles winning THE event back in 97 Radiotron and coming up some some of the craziest combinations with a fairly new move sweeping the bboy scene the “Airflare”. Through the Freestyle Session videos that were produced on VHS and then ultimately on DVD you could see the evolution of that particular move from the continuous Airflare windmill Airflare that Bboy Ivan(Flying Tortillas/Stylelements) did on FSS1 to Airflare Halos that Megaman(Soul Control) did at FSS2 there were various combinations that you will see in FSS1, 2 and 3 that were pretty much the first time people seen these moves being done in public. In this particular battle you see Pablo doing 2 Airflares which was the first time I had seen anyone attempt to do 2 a jam later he had 3 down. From there it was off to the races for folks all across the world.
Freestyle Session 3 event was at the time THE biggest event I had ever thrown. I forgot what the prize was but it really wasnt much maybe $500 in prizes or something to that effect. Over 1300 people packed into the L St. Boys & Girls Club gym in Chula Vista(San Diego). Headlining the event was the fact that STORM from Battle Squad Germany will be in the house. Back in those days there wasnt much internet action going on other then www.Bboy.com and it was only a select few that really was on it sharing information and communicating with one another. STORM was like a myth to us in the West Coast. Watching his video in mid 90′s he was the ultimate bboy with crazy footwork combo’s and also some of the illest power move combinations as well. He was the all around bboy. It was crazy when I was starting the battles Bboy Ivan comes up to me and is like sign up “Flying Tortillas” I was like who the hell is that laughing. He goes on to tell me the line up STORM, Poe One, Wicket, Flo Master, Demon Spirit, Super Dave and him. I was like WOW. Pretty much one of the first “Super CRew’s” and first crews with a stupid name that started the trend of making up dumb names lol. So both crews blasted through everyone leading to this finals.
Crazy cause after this jam Freestyle Session ended up catapulting into THE international event. When I’d go to jams for months after this all people asked me every time was when does Freestyle Session 3 VHS come out. So finally when we released it I made sure to call up every distributor at the time to get preorders and made sure that they all released at the same time. I think we sold like 5000 copies the first week. Had preorders on my website for like 500 copies. Til this day people I meet always bring this jam up either locally and around the world where they tell me they drew inspiration for what they do now. Which is crazy cause I drew inspiration from each and everyone of the people that were in this battle from some way shape or form leading up to that jam. Its a non stop evolution of inspiration.
So without further ado Freestyle Session 3′s Final Battle
SOUL CONTROL vs FLYING TORTILLAS
